It is confirmed that Roger Federer will not play the Australian Open in 2021. Although his knee continues to be in a good condition, the tennis player has decided not to play the next Open. This will be the first absence of Federer in this Australian appointment since he played for the first time in the year 2000.

With this decision, the Swiss tennis player will give time for his injury to heal and be totally in good shape for the next competitions, after the first big tournament of the year.

Australia Open Delay

The next Australian Open will finally take place from 8 to 21 February 2021. The initial date was scheduled for mid-January. However, the pandemic restrictions delayed the tournament 3 weeks.

Despite the delay, Federer and his team of coaches and fitness trainer decided not to risk the good evolution of his knee in the last two months. They gave him more time to concentrate on improving his physical capacity. This surely will allow him to return to competitive tennis in full shape.

According to the 39-year-old tennis player, he didn’t want to take the next step until he was fully prepared. Although he has not played for 11 months since the last tournament, he continues with his training at his home in Dubai. His target is to play Wimbledon, the Olympic Games and the US Open without any problem.

Second Unexpected Surgery

In February 2020, Federer underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He said he would be out for about four months, hoping to compete at Wimbledon. Eventually, the pandemic forced the suspension of the tournament, and the tennis player had to undergo another surgery in June. This left him out of competition for the rest of the 2020 season.
