An impressive victory of Stefanos Tsitsipas over Rafa Nadal surprised the Australian Open this Wednesday in Melbourne. It was in the quarter-finals leg and with this result, the world number two was eliminated from the Australian Open, creating an upset in the bets market.
With this upset, the Greek ended the Spaniard’s bid for a record 21st Grand Slam men’s singles championship.
Tsitsipas lost the first two sets, but then came back to defeat Nadal, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 7-5. The Greek pulled it off in a grueling four-hour thrilling duel to finally achieve the biggest Grand Slam victory of his career.
A Great Performance
Stefanos Tsitsipas is 12 years younger than Nadal. The 22-year-old tennis player seemed to gain energy as the match progressed, reaching balls that had been out of reach before. He also forced Nadal to hit extra shots and struggled to hold his serve in almost every game.
The young Greek player, who is fifth in the ATP rankings, had his best performance in a Grand Slam. At the end of the match, he could not hide his excitement of this great success.
Later, he declared: “I was nervous at the beginning. I don’t know what happened after the third set, I was flying like a bird, everything was working for me. It’s something indescribable.”
Next Friday 19th February Tsitsipas will play against Russian Daniil Medvedev ranked 4th in the ATP rankings.
