On Saturday,  Canelo Álvarez defeated Billy Joe Saunders by a TKO, after eight rounds. It was in the World Super Middleweight unification fight at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The event had record attendance for an indoor fight in the United States, with a crowd of more than 73.000 fans.

With this victory, the Mexican superstar Canelo Álvarez (56-1-2) won the WBO super middleweight title to add to his collection, taking it from Billy Joe Saunders (30-1).

The Fight

In the fight, Álvarez punished the Englishman beating him up while Saunders was backing off and being very cautious against the Mexican.

However, by round 8, Saunders was throwing more punches than he did at the start of the fight. But then Álvarez hurt Saunders’ right eye with a good right-hand punch. Apparently, the Englishman could not recover for the next round.

The fight was stopped in the eighth round because Saunders’ right eye was swollen shut. And Canelo won by Technical KO.

On Sunday, it was confirmed that Saunders will have surgery on multiple fractures to his orbital bone. The diagnosis was he suffered a quadripod fracture.

What’s Next for Canelo

This was the first fight of Canelo Alvarez since February when he fought against Avni Yildirim. The victory was for the Mexican, beating his rival by TKO in the third round.

Fiery Canelo now holds the WBO, WBA, and WBC super-middleweight titles, as well as The Ring Magazine. Now he is ready to chase the next belt.

In the second half of this year, the Mexican intends to challenge the American Caleb Plant, the current International Federation champion. He is very confident of defeating him and winning all the super-middleweight titles.

In this fight, Canelo would be the favorite and in case of victory over Plant, the Mexican would become the first undisputed super middleweight champion in history.

In the coming months we will know when and where the fight will take place.

Do you think Canelo will repeat the TKO with Plant like he did with Saunders?
