The Argentina national team, led by Lionel Messi, managed to claim Copa America. It happened yesterday at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, with a crowd of only 7,000 guests, where the Argentinian team defeated Brazil 1-0. It was a single goal by Angel di Maria in the 22nd minute that gave the victory to the Albiceleste team.
Argentina thus wins the Copa América again after 28 years, on the same weekend of another great final, that of the Euro Championship, where Italy has crowned champions.
First Copa America with Messi
This is the first title won by Argentina’s national team with Lionel Messi in its squad. Messi had already tried several times but lost the World Cup final in 2014 and the Copa America finals in 2007, 2015, and 2016.
Finally, he succeeded. After the match, he declared to the media: “I needed to get rid of the thorn of being able to achieve something with the national team, I had been so close for so many years. I knew that at some point it was going to happen and I think there is no better moment than this”. He also paid tribute to Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni.
Messi had a very good chance to score near the end of the match, but he finally missed the shot.
The Argentinian is the tournament’s top scorer with four goals, which he shares with Colombia’s Luis Diaz with the same scores.

Argentina, Uruguay, and…Brazil
The last time the Argentina team won Copa America was in 1993. In total, the national team has won this tournament 15 times, sharing now first place with Uruguay, which has been the tournament’s biggest winner, until now. Brazil is in third place with 9 trophies.
The Brazilian national team was seeking its second consecutive Copa America title, having won the tournament in 2019. On that occasion, Neymar could not play in the final due to injury.
At the final whistle, Neymar sank to his knees in tears, very frustrated as his own personal pursuit of international success will continue in the next championship.
This was the fifth time that Argentina and Brazil met in a South American final. The previous meetings of the two giants of South American football were in 1937, 1991, 2004, and 2007.
Lionel Messi, still a free agent so far, might make a fast decision now on whether he stays or not at Barcelona.
