The Bavarian Giant
The Bavarian club was Founded in 1900 by eleven football players of MTV 1879 Munich, led by Franz John. Tired of the conditions under which they had to play, Franz John and ten of his teammates resigned one day from their team and formed a new club called F. C. Bayern.
Bayern entered the Bundesliga for the first time in the 1965-66 season. In their debut, the Bavarian club finished third and won their second German Cup, qualifying for the following season’s European Cup. The next season 1966/67 they won their third German Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
The team´s most successful period was in the middle of the 1970s when they won the European Cup three times in a row (1974-1976), under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer, with Sepp Maier and Gerd Müller. This trio formed the backbone that brought FC Bayern to world fame.
In the 1980s, the team’s home dominance was overwhelming, winning a total of six more German championships. At the end of the decade, in 1988, Jupp Heynckes initiated a restructuring of the squad as the departure of brilliant players required a profound and significant change.
In the 1990s, with Franz Beckenbauer in the coaching and management positions, he was a major influence in helping to restructure the club in the high-pressure times of this period. As a result, Bayern won four more domestic championships, two German Cups, and a UEFA Cup.
The decade from 2010 to 2020 has been extremely successful for Bayern. The Bavarians have not stopped scoring victories and points in the Bundesliga. At present, the team is among the best in Europe.

Rivalries and Derbys
Bayern Munich has various rivalries with German and European clubs, some of them long-standing.
When it comes to German clubs, the Bavarians were rivaled with 1860 Munich, their neighbors, and oldest rivals. They play against each other in the Munich Derby.
Bayern also have a rivalry with VfB Stuttgart. This is due to the long-standing feud over who is the better South German region, Bavaria or Swabia. There is also a city rivalry between Munich and Stuttgart. The derby between the two teams is the Südderby. Bayern also had rivalries with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1970s, with Hamburg in the 1980s, and with Werder Bremen in the 1990s.
However, it is Borussia Dortmund with whom Bayern currently has the biggest rivalry. They are the two most successful teams in German football, so they share most of the titles during the season. Their rivalry was established as a classic in 1997 when Borussia Dortmund won the Champions League at Bayern Munich’s stadium. They face each other in Der Klassiker derby.
And at the European level, Bayern’s eternal rival is Real Madrid. The derby, known as the European Classic, is the most frequently repeated football match between two European clubs. Since official European competitions began, in the 1955-56 season with the birth of the European Cup, the two rivals have met in a European derby a total of twenty-six times. Real Madrid won 12 times, Bayern 11, and tying on three occasions.
