Chelsea Win Champions League after beating Man City

Reading Time: 4 minutes read

Chelsea was crowned new European Champions for the second time in its history, after a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the final game in the Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

The German midfielder Kai Havertz scored the only goal in the match in the minute 42, sealing the final result. This gave the victory to Chelsea in front of more than 14.000 spectators.

The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League this season and lost the FA Cup to Leicester. However, they were able to beat the great Real Madrid in the semi-finals, and finally, they succeed the former champions Bayern Munich, who were knocked out by PSG in the quarter-finals.

Goodbye to Manchester City Dream

For Manchester City, this defeat casts a shadow over a season in which they had won the Premier League and the League Cup. In the FA Cup they had been knocked out in the semi-finals by Chelsea.

A disappointment that coach Josep Guardiola will have to digest. The Spanish coach arrived at Manchester City in 2016 with a mission to win the Champions League. He won the competition twice as Barcelona coach, but he has failed to succeed in the last decade.

It was the first time the club had reached the final of the Champions League. Unfortunately they will have to keep waiting.

The victory in figures

The victory against Manchester City in the Champions League final is worth more than €110 million in prize money to Chelsea. After becoming the king of Europe, the squad will share an €11,5 million bonus.

Winning the final is only worth an additional €4 million compared to if they had been defeated. According to the football coefficient, Chelsea´s total income for the campaign has reached €110.8 million.

That figure does not include money from UEFA’s broadcasting revenues, which amounted to €292 million this season. Chelsea will receive 10 % of the Premier League clubs’ share. In addition, being the Champions League winner means that Chelsea will earn more money from the competition next season.

Thomas Tuchel

Meanwhile, head coach Thomas Tuchel, the man who made Chelsea´s dream come true, is about to sign an extension of his contract until 2023, with the option of an extra year.

The German coach arrived in January 2021, to take charge of a team that was mid-table in the Premier, and surviving in the Champions League. In only 6 months, Tuchel changed the mentality, and with his technique the team started to win. Finally, he has made the impossible possible.
