With the Red Devils, he became a superstar, showing excellent performance under the command of Alex Ferguson. In his first spell at Manchester United, he scored 118 goals in 292 games.

In 2009 Real Madrid signed him for €96 million, a record transfer fee at that time. The Portuguese superstar spent nine seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu breaking multiple records.
