European Super League Collapses in 48 Hours

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

The conflict continues in the European Super League, and in less than 48 hours, the huge project collapses. Fans, players, and coaches have ensured that this lucrative tournament, intended solely and exclusively for the richest will not come to an end.

Because football is not just for the big clubs. Smaller teams with lower budgets also provide plenty of surprises and great games. The exclusivity of the European Super League, based more on money than on football, has totally lost the essence of the sport. And this is what the fans have claimed.

UEFA and FIFA condemned the competition threatening that the participating clubs would be kicked out of the competitions. And players could also be banned from participating in World Cups and Euros.

Withdrawal Within 48 Hours

And the response was not long in coming. On Tuesday, one day after the announcement of the tournament, Manchester City was the first to leave the project. Later, the other five English clubs that were to take part also left the project: Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Chelsea.

On Wednesday, Atlético Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan followed the steps of the English teams, leaving Barça and Real Madrid as the only teams belonging to this entity. The big two of La Liga remain silent for the time being.

It is clear that the power of UEFA, with FIFA in cooperation, reigns more than ever. The quick destruction of the Super League project is the proof.

New Champions League

And in the midst of the Super League earthquake, UEFA also announced on 19 April the new Champions League, which will take effect from the 2024-2025 season. The tournament will expand the number of teams from 32 to 36. The criteria for competing in the Champions League will remain the same.

The four extra teams will come as follows: the third from the country with the fifth-best UEFA ranking. Another one from the qualifying round of all minor league champions. And two more for those with the best UEFA coefficient who have not qualified.

The biggest difference to the current Champions League is that the group stage disappears, as a 36 league will be created between all participants.

The new competition of the European Super League collapses before even starting, but we still have the Champions League to enjoy good football!
