Football Stars Who Played in The MLS

Major League Soccer has only 26 years of existence but has become as important as the rest of the Leagues in the States. Its incredible rise in supporters since its creation has made that the MLS has had among its ranks many of the football stars of the world’s top European leagues. 

In turn, these football superstars have contributed that MLS be a super event in the annual Football circuit that fans always look forward to, with a lot of excitement.

Let’s remember some of the great players who shone in Europe and at the World Cups, and had also a stint in the Major Soccer League.

10. Robbie Keane / Nationality: Irish / Team: LA Galaxy

Keane is the top scorer of the Irish national team. After playing for many teams in Europe, mainly in the Premier League, he arrived at LA Galaxy in 2011, winning three MLS titles. He was chosen as the league’s MVP in 2014 and also the team’s Most Valuable Player for four seasons.

9. Frank Lampard / Nationality: English / Team: NY City

Lampard arrived at the MLS in 2015 although he had a somewhat peculiar path, after leaving Chelsea. He was in a two-year spell that was interrupted by a loan spell at Manchester City. The player coincided with Pirlo and Villa before ending his career in 2016. He scored 15 goals in 31 appearances for New York.  

8. David Villa / Nationality: Spanish / Team: NY City FC

The Spanish footballer has been the country’s leading total goal scorer with 59 goals. He was even the first Spaniard to reach 50 international goals. He has been the top scorer at Euro 2008 and even has a Silver Boot for the 2010 World Cup.

7. Andrea Pirlo / Nationality: Italian / Team: NY City FC

The Italian is an Olympic bronze medalist and also a 2006 World Cup champion. Andrea Pirlo has had a great international career and an even better European career. He has scored 55 goals with five different clubs and has two Champion League titles. Pirlo was the 2006 World Cup Final Man of the Match.

6. Didier Drogba / Nationality: Ivorian / Team: Montreal Impact

Drogba has been Ivory Coast’s all-time leading goalscorer. He has scored 65 goals in 104 appearances and has been Chelsea’s highest-scoring foreign-born player with 104 goals. He is the first African player to have scored more than 100 goals in the Premier League.

5. Kaka / Nationality: Brazilian / Team: Orlando City

This Brazilian was there when the country won the 2002 World Cup and FIFA Confederations Cup in 2005 and 2009. His notable accomplishments are two-time Serie A Footballer of the Year, FIFA World Player of the Year, Ballon d’Or, IFFHS World’s Best Playmaker, among others.

4. Wayne Rooney / Nationality: English / Team: DC United

Rooney is still the youngest goalscorer for England and has the record for most goals for Manchester United (253). He has helped Manchester United win 16 trophies that include Premier League titles, FA Cup, and a Champions League title.

3. Thierry Henry / Nationality: French / Team: NY Red Bulls

Henry has been France’s all-time leading goalscorer (51) and was a part of the World Cup-winning team in 1998. He has even been there where France won UEFA Euro 2000 and FIFA Confederations Cup in 2003. Talking about MLS, he has scored 51 goals for Red Bulls.

4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic / Nationality: Swedish / Team: LA Galaxy

Ibrahimovic has been the all-time leading goalscorer for the Swedish National team (62). His European career boasts of his 268 goals for six clubs in over 14 seasons. The player arrived in 2018 at LA Galaxy and revolutionized the MLS, scoring 53 goals in 58 games. In the two years he played in the LA Galaxy the Swede received his team’s Most Valuable Player, Golden Ball, and Best Goal awards in both seasons.

1. David Beckham / Nationality: English / Team: LA Galaxy

David Beckham is a living legend that has captained England 59 times and had an even impressive European and MLS career. He has been a two-time Ballon d’Or runner-up and two-time FIFA Player of the Year runner-up. Beckham was one of the first to migrate to MLS and became one of the most famous football stars in the American League, playing for LA Galaxy from 2007 to 2012.
