Reading Time: 5 minutes read

The Mexican League 2020 has just begun with matchday 3  already behind, and players  are ready to give their best to get the Trophy and thus increase their value in the market. This season the league´s Apertura2020 has been named Guard1anes 2020 in tribute to all the health sanitary personnel who are fighting every day against the pandemic in the country, and who are actually the protagonists against the virus.

In this article we will name the 10 players with the highest market value in this Apertura2020. The current Champion Monterrey dominates the list, but Guadalajara has the most expensive one.

1. José Juan Macías – Guadalajara ($11,957,463)

The Chivas´center forward will turn 21 next September, and he is the only player in the MX League valued over US$10 million. In December 2018, Macías joined León on a year-long loan deal with an option to buy, but he returned to Guadalajara in December 2019. In less than a year, the value of the Mexican striker has increased by 100%.

2. Leo Fernández – Tigres ($8,541,045)

Tigres´ attacking midfielder is one of the key pieces of the team, at least in numbers he justified his salary, being the best player of the Clausura 2020. On December 2019, Fernández joined Mexican club Toluca on a season-long loan, but in 2020, he came back with the Tigres making a triumphant debut. He won player of the month of January in the Liga MX.

3. Maximiliano Meza – Monterrey ($8,541,045)

The Argentine professional footballer who plays as a midfielder is another important name in Monterrey’s starting line-up. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder arrived from Argentina’s Independiente de Avellaneda to bring quality to the Mexican side, although his value has plummeted by almost 50% compared to last year due to a decrease in his performance

4. Roberto Alvarado – Cruz Azul ($8,541,045)

The ‘Piojo’ is one of four Mexican players on the list and is another young man who has pretenders in the Old Continent. Cruz Azul’s attacking midfielder is one of the best prospects for the Mexican football and export material. In three years he went from being worth 780 thousand dollars to 8.4 million dollars. He scored two goals in ten games during the last tournament.

5. Carlos Rodríguez – Monterrey ($8,541,045)

The 23-year-old midfielder is one of Monterrey’s most promising players and another of the jewels of the Mexican football, having played just 13 games for Mexico’s national team, he is under contract with the Rayados until June 2023. In 2017-2018 he was loaned out to third division Spanish team Toledo, appeared in 30 matches along with three goals. He has a good market in Europe, so maybe we can see him playing in Europe soon.

6. Brian Lozano – Santos Laguna ($8.541.045)

The Uruguayan player is also among the most highly rated players in the league. At 26, the left-winger has already worn the colours of America for two seasons. He has quickly become Santos’ best attacking weapon, although he unfortunately suffered an injury that will prevent him from playing in the Apertura 2020. He has had several offers from Europe.

7. Rogelio Funes Mori – Monterrey ($7,677,000)

The 1.85m Argentinian striker arrived in Mexican football after spending four years with Benfica of Portugal. In the last Clausura 2020 he played nine games, scored two goals and gave two assists. He is one of the top scorers in Mexican football today and has become one of the best strikers in Mexican football.

8. Vincent Janssen – Monterrey ($7,677,000)

The Dutch player arrived last year from Tottenham and made his official debut in August 2019. The centre forward, called el Toro (the bull) scored 11 goals in 32 competitive games with Rayados and won the 2019 Apertura. Since he is playing with Monterrey he has already proved he is a very important part of the team and his salary is justified.

9. Guido Pizarro – Tigres ($7.100.000)

The 30-year-old Argentine is currently a defensive midfielder for the Tigers since 2013. In 2017 he was on loan for a year from La Liga’s Sevilla FC, where he made 30 appearances, 24 of them in La Liga, earning up to 7.5 million euros. He has been a player with the Argentine national team since 2017 and also holds Mexican nationality. In 2018 he returned to the Tigers and due to his defensive skills he has also been qualified as a sweeper.

10. Victor Guzmán – Pachuca ($7,100,000)

The Pachuca attacking midfielder turned 25 in February and was ranked among the top 10 midfielders in the last MX Clausura 2020 tournament, playing for his latest club, Chivas of Guadalajara. He signed with Pachuca in December 2019, but before his debut in the Apertura 2020, having tested positive for doping, Pachuca cancelled the agreement with the player and now Guzmán is awaiting legal actions against the club. Chivas may leave the doors open for him to return in the future, but not this season.

Although this list may vary and/or be extended until the end of the season, we do not want to detract from many other exceptional players whose financial worth may not reflect their efforts and are not fairly valued.
