The year 2020 has been impacted by unexpected events caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that has stopped the world. The hiatus in every business of any sector has caused a lot of economical damage, and the movie industry is one of the most affected since every awards ceremonies, events, festivals has been cancelled, halting film production and closing cinemas.

Experts affirm that only the called Spanish flu, which emerged at the end of World War I, impacted the cinema business on a similar scale. So this is the second time a pandemic has damaged this sector.

Certainly one of the biggest consequences for the movie industry has been the closure of the cinemas. With a three-month hiatus where no films have been played in practically the entire world, and the moving of many productions to the following year, can make the losses in the sector reach up to $20 million dollars in 2020.

After the reopening of movie theatres , countries across the world attempt to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic crisis, and all theaters are filled with premieres to welcome the spectators and try to recover the incomes frozen by the lockdown.

Nevertheless, the return to movie theatres is already in progress and although it will not be the same as before, due to the health and safety protocols that will have to be followed, the distribution companies are willing to collect and recover their losses as soon as possible by offering their best premieres to the audience, that missed so much this kind of family entertainment.

It is a fact that the commercial motion picture industry is dominated by American productions and this is clearly seen  in the following list of the highest grossing movies worldwide in  the  extraordinary year of 2020:

This is a new version of the classical novel of H. G. Wells, Invisible Man, already performed in several films in the past, but this time the story is not told from the point of view of the monster, but from the victim´s, changing completely the focus and approach of the original story. The film is about gender violence, about abuse, about silence and about the importance of believing the victims.

Watching the film will be an experience full of action, drama and great suspenso, apart from the interesting special effects.

The Gentlemen / STX Entertainment

Worldwide gross: US$ 114.9 millions

Leading actors: Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, Matthew McConaughey.

This new film of the british director Guy Richie is a criminal thriller and action movie in the usual style to which he has accustomed us. This time the plot is about an American drug dealer who wants to retire and sell his marijuana empire in England, resulting in conflicts with rivals, a boxing coach and a very meticulous private investigator, among others.

In the film we can appreciate the wild mafia violence, foul language, testosterone and black humor typical of Richie’s style and, as always, with a stellar cast that is impossible not to be impressed by.

Those who missed Guy Richie in action will enjoy the movie to the fullest.

Onward / Walt Disney Pictures

Worldwide gross: US$ 110.3 millions

Leading actors (voices): Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Octavia Spencer.

The latest Disney-Pixar production is this computer-animated urban fantasy-adventure film. The story is set in a suburban fantasy world in which two teenage elf brothers embark on an adventure to discover whether there is still some magic in the world that will allow them to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember.

The Pixar animation is fascinating, reaching a new level on the film, and the story traps the spectator in his seat, making him part of the show and providing fun for the whole family.

The Call of the Wild / 20th Century

Worldwide gross: US$ 107.6 millions

Leading actors: Harrison Ford, Omar Sy.

This adaptation of a short adventure novel by Jack London and published in 1903, tells us the story of a dog, a crossbreed between a St. Bernard and a Scotch Collie, whose quiet, comfortable and happy life was suddenly upset when he was stolen from his home in Santa Clara County, California and transplanted to the exotic wilds landscapes of the Alaskan Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. As a rookie in a group of sled dogs (and later their leader), Buck experiences an adventure he will never forget, finding his place in the world and thus becoming his own master.

The film is a familiar but heartwarming adventure that is surprisingly funny and emotional.

We are sure that after this pandemic, the film industry will have new plots and stories to add to the ones they already have.
