So let’s dive into it and learn how teasers work, being more familiar with this type of bets, and becoming a winning expert.
What a Teaser Bet Is
This is a type of multiple betting that consists of increasing the handicap in favor of any of the teams participating in a certain sports event. The number of selections depends on the bookie. They can range from a minimum of 2 to 8 or 10. The key is to choose the number of points to be added or subtracted, as well as the number of selections included in the teaser.
In order to win a teaser bet, the most important thing is that all the predictions included in the bet must be right.
The more selections there are, the higher the odds will be, although it will be more difficult to get the bet right. But the return will be also higher.
Sports Allowed for Teaser Betting
Teaser bets only allow you to bet on basketball and American football. Almost always on only two competitions of each sport. In basketball, you can bet on the NBA and NCAA, the university league, and other basketball leagues around the world. Concerning American football, on the NFL and NCAAF, the corresponding university league.
Every season, sports books have seen a growing trend towards sports bettors taking teaser bets and have become a popular way of sports betting.
It is obvious that Teaser Betting is fairly popular during the NFL and NBA seasons. Teaser bets represent over 15% of NFL bets and are increasingly popular.
The basic idea is to have multiple teams cover the win. Sports bettors also have the choice to move the line in their favor by adding more teams to the teaser. For example, the most common teaser bet is between 4 to 6 points in basketball, and between 6 to 10 points in football.
Odds for Teaser Bets
With teaser bets we will use American odds, which are commonly used in the States. These odds are a positive or negative number that tells us the amount we have to bet in order to win 100 units. For instance, if we have odds of +114 it means that we will win $114 if we bet $100. But if we have a negative odds, like -140 this means we have to bet $140 to earn $100.
The odds change according to the number of points to add or subtract, as well as the number of teams to combine for the teaser.
The number of selections also affects the final odds, but also the number of void or cancelled bets. If one of the selections in the teaser is not resolved or is void, the teaser is recalculated from the valid selections. Thus, if in a teaser of 6 selections one is cancelled, it will be paid as a teaser of 5 provided that all are correct.
Teaser Bet Examples
The optimal bet to make in an NFL market is a teaser which takes a team across the 3 and the 7. That means teasing a favorite of 7.5 to 9.5 points down below 3 points and teasing an underdog of 0.5 to 2.5 points up above 7 points.
To understand it more clearly, this is an example of how a six-point Teaser bet would work. Let´s choose an NFL match between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants:
In this game, Dallas is the favorite with a handicap -3.5. The underdog is the New York Giants, with the handicap +2.5. If we add 6 teaser points, we bet on the Dallas handicap +2.5 and Giants +8.5.
So when we bet on the handicap for the Dallas Cowboys, they have moved from a -3.5 favorite single bet to a +2.5 (-3.5 + 6) underdog six-point teaser bet. The same happens with the handicap on the New York Giants, it moved from +2.5 underdog to +8.5 (+2.5 + 6) underdogs. This will significantly increase the chance of winning this selection.
