Juventus: Farewell to Champions League!

Reading Time: 4 minutes read

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after their last-16 tie against Porto. For the second season in a row, La Vecchia Signora is out of the competition.

Although the Italians won the match 3-2, they had already been defeated in the first leg 2-1. So the two goals Porto scored away this time, finally gave them a place in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo´s Frustration

The star of the Italian team, Cristiano Ronaldo, played in the entire game but did not score for his club, and he was frustrated at their elimination from the tournament. This is the first time in 15 years that he has failed to score in a European play-off.

With Juventus out of the Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo is out of the competition for the third year with his team. Hard times for the Portuguese and top scorer in the Champions League, who does not seem to make his team getting back on track since he arrived in Italy in 2018.

Right now, his failure at Juventus and in the Champions League is evident, as in three years with the player in their ranks, the club’s presence in the championship has been very short. And supposedly, the Portuguese signed with Juve to win the Champions League, whose last title was won in 1996.

Apart from their brief presence in the Champions League, in the Italian league this season they could also miss out on the title as the team is in third place in the table. There are still 12 rounds to play and Inter is 10 points ahead of Juve. In the second position is Milan with 4 points more than Juve.

However, Ronaldo and his team still have a chance to win the Coppa Italia. This will be in the final, on 19th May, when they face Atalanta.

The Champions League’s Curse

In Serie A, Milan, Inter, Atalanta, and Lazio improved and strengthened in the last 2 seasons. But on the contrary, Juventus has been steadily given signals of decline.

The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018 was supposed to push Juve higher up in the European competitions. They had already won seven Serie A titles in a row, but their presence in the Champions League did not end well, losing the final twice.

Unfortunately, since his arrival, Cristiano Ronaldo has not fulfilled his promise to give Juve their Champions League title. On the contrary, even Juventus have won both Serie A titles since CR7’s arrival, have become a minor force in Europe, even in other domestic competitions.

To Sum Up

The dominance of the Vecchia Signora in Italian football looks like it is coming to an end. But this is not a big surprise. These are the consequences of what we have been seeing during the last seasons. And Christiano Ronaldo seems not to be the solution for the recovery of Juventus.

The great scorer is now 36 years old and his contract with Juventus ends on 30th June 2022. We will see if the bad streak disappears for both the club and CR7 before that date arrives, although only a miracle can make it change. But as things stand right now, the player’s future at the club might be in doubt.
