The world of football knows that Real Madrid is the most successful team in football history. The white club is the only one with the record figures of 13 European Cups and 34 Leagues.
Real Madrid Club de Fútbol is a professional football club based in Madrid. It was founded in 1902 by Juan Padrós, curiously he was Catalan from Barcelona and the second official president of the club.
At that time, football was growing so much in Spain that Madrid F.C. proposed a tournament in honor of King Alfonso XIII, being the only nationwide competition at that time. The initiative became the Spanish Cup (Copa del Rey). The Club won the first of four consecutive Copa del Rey titles. In 1920, the King of Spain awarded the title of Real (Royal) to the club.
Real Madrid is one of the founders of the Spanish National League Championship in 1928, and the club has never been relegated to the Second Division.
The club is currently the third most valuable team in La Liga behind FC Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid.
Real Madrid is the King of Europe and Spain and no other club comes closer to his legacy.
Club Success Disrupted by Civil War
With its new royal title, Real Madrid was the pioneer in Spanish football. Early in the 1920s, the team had a very international success when they played outside the country. And the club understood very well that the only way to achieve success was choosing the best players. And so they did, signing the goalkeeper Zamora and two defensives Ciriaco and Quincoces. The trio was the best defense in the world.
That season 1931-1932, the whites won the Liga without losing any match and in the following 4 years, the club won 2 leagues and 2 Cups. But was the last achievement of Real Madrid before the second Republic ends.
In 1936, after one month of their last Copa de la República, the Spanish civil war started, and the military conflict spoiled the moment of glory of the club. A lot of players left their careers or even the country to go into exile. The team did not recover until long after the war, being the conflict an absolute tragedy for the club.
From 1933 till 1954 was the worst streak for the team, being on the verge of relegation. However, in 1943 during a confrontation with FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semifinals, Real Madrid beat 11-1 to the culés in the return match. The team came through 3-0 in the first leg but there are suspicions that Barcelona players were intimidated by the regime’s police. Since then, the rivalry of the clubs became eternal.
In 1953 the team signed Alfredo di Stéfano, the best player in Real Madrid history, and the team started its path to become the king of Spanish football. The player defended the team for 11 seasons.
Since then, the team has not stopped winning trophies all over the world and its thirteen European Cups have made it a very difficult rival to overcome.
