The team has a total of 41 trophies in official competitions, 31 national and 10 international. Among the national ones, there are 17 League titles (a record), 8 Mexican Cup (a record), and 6 Champion of Champions. Among the internationals, they have 7 CONCACAF Champions League trophies (a record), 2 Interamerican Cup trophies, and 1 CONCACAF Giants Cup trophy.
All this makes it the institution with the highest number of championships among all Mexican football clubs.
The club is currently the third most valuable team in Liga MX behind Monterrey and Cruz Azul.
The Eagles’ Flight
The history of Club America begins with the merger of two local football teams from two different Marist schools. The students reached an agreement and the merger took place on October 12, 1916. Since this date commemorates the discovery of the continent, they thought that “America” would be a good name for a Mexican football team.
During the 1920s, the team experienced its first era of great success. They became the first four-time champion of Mexican football, winning four consecutive championships.
América was the first team to use Mexican-born players in its entire squad since at that time, most of the players were of Spanish origin.
The team changed its nickname to las Águilas in 1981 and started a golden age. But in 1988-89 the club fell into a grey period without winning a single league title. However, in that period between 1991 and 1993, las Águilas won two CONCACAF titles and another of the Interamerican Cup.
The team returned to its good old days in the 2002 Summer short tournament. Then they won their first league title in 13 years.
After its restructuring in 2011, Club America has been one of the best teams in Mexican football.

Rivalries and Derbys
Of Mexico’s Big 4 (America, Guadalajara, Cruz Azul, and Pumas), America is number one. Its biggest and longest rivalry is with las Chivas de Guadalajara.
This rivalry is one of the biggest in Mexico and the world. It dates back to 1943, where America played against Guadalajara for the first time. Both clubs are the most popular and most successful in the country in terms of championships and have never been relegated.
Apart from this, America is considered the club of the rich, because of its policy of signing both domestic and foreign players, paying very high prices. In contrast, Guadalajara is known for not allowing the signing of foreign players. They do not even accept naturalized players, being the only club in Mexico to do so.
The derby between the two giants is El Clásico, El Súper Clásico or El Clásico de Clásicos.
América also plays local derbies with Club Azul and Pumas UNAM, as all three clubs are based in Mexico City. The derby against Pumas UNAM is the Clásico Capitalino, and the rivalry between the two is very strong. The third derby is the Clásico Jóven, where América plays against Cruz Azul.
