The club is currently the most valuable in French Ligue 1, with a total market value of € 869.80 million. Today, Paris Saint-Germain has a strong financial position that has been maintained thanks to the club’s lucrative sponsorship deals with several commercial partners, such as the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), Nike, and ALL.
The club was founded in August 1970, by the merger of two teams. One was Paris Football Club (founded in 1969) and the other Stade Saint-Germain (founded in 1904). The new name for the team was Paris Saint-Germain Football Club. The club represented both the city of Paris and Saint Germain in Laye, a commune located in the western suburbs of the French capital.
Four years after its foundation PSG reached the French first division Ligue, winning the French Cup in 1982 and 1983. In 1986 the club won the national league title for the first time. This gave them access to compete in Europe. There they played some memorable matches but in the end, failed to advance past the quarter-final. In that period PSG developed an attacking-minded football, becoming a fan favorite in France, and also abroad. This was the beginning of the club´s golden years.

Rise and Fall
In 1991, Canal+ bought the club and the new owners invested a large sum of money into star players signings. This made the team became one of the most dominant in France. They won a lot of trophies in that period, and in 1996 the club won its first international title, the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
But in the ‘00s the club went through a period of decline. This was due to very bad management and the extreme pressure to win titles. The club won some Cups during the 00s, but in that period had also numerous crisis situations.
In 2011, the club’s performance improved when the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) group bought 70 % of the team. Finally, in 2012, QIA became the full owner of Paris Saint-Germain. During that period, Zlatan Ibrahimović was added to the squad and PSG returned to the spotlight. They won three consecutive Ligue 1 titles from 2013 to 2015, and several French Cups. And with the incorporation of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé in 2017, the team was unstoppable.

Rivalries and Derbys
Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille have developed a rivalry over the years, despite being from two completely different and geographically distant cities. This rivalry was particularly strong in the 1980s-1990s.
They play against each other in the derby Le Classique, and the fixture is the biggest rivalry in France, and one of the most notable in the world of football. Is the match that sparks the rivalry between north and south, since the meeting represents a confrontation between the most important and influential territories in all of France. On one side Paris, the French capital, the city of opulence and wealth. On the other is Marseille, the most important city in the southern part of France, where there are a large number of immigrants.
Lately, PSG also has a rival in the Champions League: FC Barcelona. Although the two clubs have only met in five knockout rounds of the European competition, the clubs have already become irreconcilable. Barcelona and PSG have created a rivalry that was non-existent before 1995.
In eight years, between 2013 and 2021, the Blaugranas and Parisians have had to play against each other five times in the Champions League. And the clash has already become a modern clásico.
