Premier League: Mourinho Fired as Manager

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

Tottenham Hotspur announced in a statement on Monday 19th April that it was terminating the services of José Mourinho as manager of the English Premier League club, after just 17 months in charge. The news comes on the same day that the European Super League is confirmed.

The team’s poor run of form, with just one win in their last six games, as well as their Europa League exit by Dinamo Zagreb in the last 16, has precipitated his replacement in the bench.

The 58-year-old Portuguese coach arrived at Spurs replacing Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 with a contract until the end of the 2022-2023 season.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss leaves Spurs in seventh place in the Premier League table, and at five points off the Champions League places.

About any statement on the press about his departure, he said: “I’m not going to talk. You know me, you know I’m not going to say anything”. When asked if he would take a break, Mourinho said: “It’s not necessary. I’m always in football”.

EFL Cup Pending

The manager’s sacking comes just six days before the Spurs face Manchester City in the EFL Cup final. The game is next Sunday at Wembley Stadium, where the club is aiming to win their first trophy in 13 years.

Mourinho’s last game in charge was last Friday, drawing away to Everton (2-2).

Time in the Premier League

Since his departure from Real Madrid in 2013, José Mourinho has never managed to fulfill his contracts completely. But this is the first time in almost 20 years that he has ended his tenure at a club without winning a title.

In his second period as Chelsea manager, he won the Premier League and the EFP Cup in the 2014-15 season. And with Manchester United, he won another EFP Cup, the Europa League, and a Community Shield.

So far, it has been 16 years of Mourinho’s Champions League achievements.

According to The Independent, the Portuguese coach will receive 17 million euros in severance pay before the end of his two-year contract.

Following his dismissal, Ryan Mason will be his replacement coach for the time being until the end of the season.
