Following in his father’s footsteps, Romeo Beckham, son of English soccer legend David Beckham, made his professional soccer debut over the weekend. He signed for Fort Lauderdale, the reserve team of Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer club co-owned by David Beckham.

Fort Lauderdale CF is the sister team to Inter Miami CF and according to ESPN, the club is League One of the United Soccer League. Inter Miami is currently ninth in the Eastern Conference of the MLS.

Quick debut and a close teammate

The 19-year-old Beckham, debuted as midfielder wearing the number 11 shirt. He played alongside Harvey Neville, the son of ex-Manchester United trainee Phil Neville, who is now the head coach of Inter Miami, the club that owns and runs Fort Lauderdale CF. David Beckham and Phil Neville used to be also teammates at Premier League club Manchester United.

Romeo joined recently Fort Lauderdale CF and his first appearance was not long in coming. His first match was on Sunday against South Georgia Tormenta, in which he played 79 minutes, without making any remarkable performance. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

After the game, the young Beckham posted on Instagram: “Blessed to have made my pro debut tonight. “Full focus on to the next match.”

There´s nothing like influences

Romeo is one of the five children of the Beckham family, David and wife Victoria Beckham, a  fashion designer and former Spice Girls, the British musical group famous in the ‘90s.

During an interview in Vogue in March, Victoria revealed that Romeo had started training professionally because this was ultimately what he wanted to do. So it was not surprising that she was the first to congratulate his son on social media. After Romeo´s debut game, she posted “We are so proud of you Romeo x.”

Needless to say, the fact that the teenagers Beckham and Neville are playing in the club connected with Inter Miami and owned by their respective parents, does not convince everyone. Probably both newbies will play again next 2 October in the match against Grenville Triumph.

The Beckham name is very significant in the US, after David´s move from Premier League to MLS joining LA Galaxy. His signing with the Galaxy had a lasting impact on MLS.

Let´s see what Romeo Beckham can offer to the MLS world after his debut, apart from his influential famous name.
