The summer Olympics is the most awaited event for all athletes who want to demonstrate their skills in each discipline. They want to achieve worldwide recognition and leave a mark in the tournament’s book of records. The Olympics program has hosted lots of sports that, subsequently, the IOC excluded or replaced with other disciplines.

From the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 until our days, the following 10 sports were played officially in the tournament. But at one point, they disappeared completely from the Olympic schedule.

Croquet

Croquet was only once included in the Olympic schedule. It was in 1900 in Paris where the French team won all the events.

Cricket

This well-known sport of English origin is also widely played in India. It was included as an Olympic sport once, at the Paris 1890 Games. After more than 130 years, the cricket world is still hoping to be part of the tournament again.

Jeu de Paume

This game literally means “game of the palm”, and was an official Olympic game in London 1908 only once. It is also called Real Tennis or Court Tennis.

Lacrosse

Very similar to hockey, Lacrosse was included in the Olympic program in San Luis 1904 and London 1908. It reappeared as an exhibition in Amsterdam 1928 and Los Angeles 1932. It is very popular on the USA east coast and it is originally from the native Americans.

Basque Pelota

This is a very popular historic sport from the north of Spain that was included in the program in Barcelona 1992. But as it was only practiced in the Spanish Basque Country, the sport was excluded from the games after 1992.

Polo

This famous horse sport played with hammers had its place among the official sports in the Olympics Games of 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924, 1936, that finally was also excluded.

Roque is the American version of croquet, played with a hammer on a flat surface. It was an Olympic sport only once in St. Louis 1904, where the American team won all three medals.

Tug of War

Everyone is familiar with the tug of war game. Two teams pull a rope which they have to attract with their own strength to their side. This game was an Olympic sport in the first years of the modern games, in the editions from 1900 to 1920. 120 years later it was again selected among other sports to be included in the Tokyo 2020 games. But the request was finally declined.

Water Motor sports

Also called Powerboating or Motor Boating, this sport was included only once in the London 1908 Olympics, where the English team triumphed. They were practiced in three categories: 8 meters, 60-foot, and open class.
