Baseball, this great and entertaining sport in the States, can be also a great unknown for many. It can seem a very complex sport, with rules difficult to understand. But with the tips you will find in this article, you will unravel the secrets of this sport and will be ready to bet smart on the MLB.

For many centuries, baseball has been the most popular sport in the United States. Baseball is the nation’s national sport. However, over the past few decades, it has become less popular due to the increase in the influence of American football and basketball.

The game of baseball can seem confusing sometimes. But after reading the ultimate MLB guide, you will understand the basics of the game and everything will become simple to bet with the following tips.

What is the American League and National League ❓

The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs is the official organization name for the National League (NL). It was founded in 1876 and is the oldest of the two leagues that form Major League Baseball. The other major league is the American League (AL).

How Many Teams Play in the MLB ❓

A total of 30 teams from the two leagues will compete in the MLB competition, 15 in the National League and 15 in the American League. Each league has three divisions, grouped by geographical location and named East, Central, and West.

How Many Games Are Played in the MLB Season ❓

A season normally lasts from April to September. Each team plays 162 regular season games. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the MLB reduced the 2020 season to just 60 games.

The MLB games are widely followed around the world and after reading our tips it will be much easier for you to bet on.

How to Reach the MLB Final ❓

Following the regular season, the postseason or the playoffs starts. This is the elimination tournament to determine the champions who will face each other in the World Series, the MLB’s annual championship game.

Every year, only 10 teams of each league will qualify for the playoffs.

The six teams that win each of the divisions East, Central, and West of the AL and NL, qualify automatically for the Divisional Series, which is actually the quarter-final. As there are 3 divisions for each league, 6 teams will go straight to this stage. But they need to rival the other two teams, so there is the “wild card” round per league where the 2 best runners-up face each other.

The winners of the Divisional Series go on to the Championship Series. These are the semi-finals, where two teams, one from the American League and one from the National League, will be crowned. These are the ones who go on to the World Series, the finals. This is a best-of-seven, and the first team to win four games will be the champion of the tournament.

We are going to show you everything about how to play Baseball and give you some tips so that you will bet smartly on MLB.

🏟  The Field

The venue where baseball is played is called ballpark or diamond. The infield is a square and has a base at each corner: first base, second base, third base, and home base. Each base is 90 feet away from the next. In the middle of the diamond is the pitcher’s mound which is 60.5 feet away from home plate.

Far beyond the diamond is the playing field. A wall surrounds the field between 325 and 450 feet away from the home plate. There are also two “foul lines” that extend to the wall from the first and third baselines.

At the end of each foul line where it meets the outside wall, there is a huge “foul pole” to distinguish which long hits are fair and which are fouls. The area between the first and third baselines and the outfield wall is what we call “fair territory”.

📋 The Game

The purpose of the game is to hit a ball with a bat, moving the ball across the field and running through the infield looking to reach as many bases as possible until it goes around the base from which it was hit (home), scoring the so-called run.

At the same time, defensive players look for the ball at bat to eliminate the player who hit the ball or other runners, before they get to any of the bases first or score the run.

The team that scores the most runs after the nine episodes (innings) of the match is the winner.

In each inning the batting team sends one player, the hitter or batter, in turn, to bat the ball until three hitters are “out” (strike). At the same time, the pitching team has nine players on the field trying to prevent them from scoring.

Each team only has nine players “on the field” at any one time. But they are normally twenty-five players in total, the rest are substitutes. They can bring a substitute into the game at any time, whether because of injury, fatigue, or tactical reasons. But once the substitute replaces the player, he can not return to the game again.

⚾ Scoring in Baseball

The points scored in Baseball are called runs. Any time a runner manages to reach home base, he scores a run.

To do it, the player must advance over first, second, and third base and return to home plate, touching bases in that order. He must do it before recording three outs on the board. During the run, the player must have reached each base without being put out.

If a hitter manages to hit the ball over the outfield wall, then he scores a Home Run. After that scoring, he, and any other base-runners automatically advance to home base.

In normal play, ties should not occur in baseball, as the rules state to play extra innings until one of the two teams wins the game.

📌 The Players Positions

In this ultimate MLB guide, we show you the descriptions of the nine players’ positions on defense:

1 ➤ The Pitcher is placed in the center of the diamond to throw the ball from a slightly elevated area called a mound.

2 ➤ The Catcher who stands behind the home plate and receives the pitches that the batter misses.

3 ➤ The First baseman, whose function is to catch the ball before the runner reaches the base.

4 ➤ The Second baseman is a very important player to cut a fielder’s shot to second base. And also to make important plays in the playfield.

5 ➤ The Third baseman has to wait for the batter’s ball to come. If he catches it, he must send it to home, to first base or to third base, eliminating the runner from the other team.

6 ➤ The Shortstop is an additional player placed between second and third bases who has to reach the balls at long distances

7-8-9 ➤ A Left fielder, Center fielder, and Right fielder are placed in the outfield area as seen from the batter’s, or catcher’s, perspective. Their main function is to catch the high hits to make outs. They’re also in charge to return to the playfield the hits that go to the outfield.

✅  What is the MLB Draft ❓

The Major League Baseball draft is the event that assigns amateur level players from high schools, universities, and other amateur level clubs players to teams.

Since 1965, the MLB Draft has been held, and the order of the draft is determined by the ranking position of the teams in the previous season. Thus the team with the lowest ranking receives the first selection.

Unlike other U.S. leagues, the Major League Draft is one of the largest with 40 rounds. This is a very long event compared to the NHL and NFL Drafts which has 7 rounds, or the NBA Draft with only 2 rounds.

The MLB Draft is also different from other leagues because it takes place during the regular season, always in early June.

But in March 2020, MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), agreed to shorten the present year’s draft to five rounds and halving the draft to 20 rounds from 2021 on.

🏆  What is the MLB World Series❓

Every October, the world of sports is in celebration with the MLB World Series. This event is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada  between the champion teams of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). They face each other for the MLB trophy.

The winner of the World Series must win four games to be crowned the new kings of baseball.

The World Series has been held annually since 1903. The team with the most series won is the New York Yankees, with 27 trophies. They are followed by the St. Louis Cardinals with 11 and the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox with 9. The winner of 2020 is the Los Angeles Dodgers and this is already their 7th trophy.

The Major Leagues will start the 2021 season on April 1st, 2021, expecting that all teams will play their first game on the opening day. This has not happened since 1968.
