US Masters 2020 – Golf is Back to Stay

Reading Time: 7 minutes read

In March 2020 Augusta National Golf Club announced the postponement of the Masters Tournament due to the coronavirus which was previously planned to take place on April 9th to12th, 2020.

Finally it is confirmed that the 84th edition of the Masters Golf Tournament will be taking place at the Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia From 9th to 15th November. This is the first major golf tournament of the 2020 season, and one of the four most important tournaments in men’s professional golf, along with the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship.

This time the winner of this tournament will receive a prize of around 2 million dollars, and the coveted green jacket, the tournament’s distinctive symbol, which will be given by the winner of the previous edition to the new champion, according to the tradition.

Additionally, the winner will also be invited to participate in the other three major tournaments over the next five years, and will receive a lifetime invitation to play the Augusta Masters.

The good news for this edition is that golfers winning  events between now and the Masters in November, will automatically qualify for the next 2021 Masters. Normally, a golfer would qualify for the next Masters played by winning a full-field tournament, but normally Masters are not played within five months of each other.

The tournament was born in 1934 with the name Augusta National Invitation Tournament that was used for 5 years until 1939, when it was finally called “The Masters”.

A Beautiful Scenery

The course of Augusta National Golf Club is one of the most beautiful, an example of design, mystery, charming and strategy, where the players are challenged to plan perfectly every shot.

For a landscaper, the Augusta National Golf course is the most beautiful garden in the world.

Every fairway has the name of a plant, and the reason is that in the past this property was a huge nursery: a 148-hectare land plot called Fruitlands Nurseries.

During the tournament we will hear names like Pink Dogwood, Yellow Jasmine, Magnolia or Carolina Cherry, among others, while the game is taking place and the golfers are on their journey to complete the established holes.

The course has a total length of 7.475 yards (6.835 meters) with 72 Par.

The Weather in November

This is going to be an atypical Masters, because it will be held in November instead of the usual April. Temperatures in November will be between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, lower than in spring. During the 2019 tournament, the temperatures reached between 10 and 21 degrees Celsius.

The course will probably be longer in November and the north wind will play against it from the first hole. There will be some holes that will be harder to reach in two strokes only and those who try may be risking more than they should.

In the month of November there will be approximately two and a half daylight hours less , so obviously this year they will have to advance the starts as much as possible or, alternatively schedule two-tee starts. This means that the tournament begins with competitors starting their rounds on the tenth hole as well as the first hole. It is used to squeeze competitors onto the course when there is concern about fitting in a large field with a limited amount of daylight.

Last year, two tees were used in the final round of the tournament in anticipation that the heavy rains expected in the afternoon could affect the development of the game.

With all this, players will lose the advantage they always had at Augusta National, so the tournament is expected to be more difficult for the golfers.

An Exclusive Private Club

Augusta National Golf Club has about 300 members, which are only chosen strictly by invitation, so nobody can apply to join the Club.

It is a very famous private Club in the world and one of the most exclusive. Since it is a for-profit corporation, it does not disclose its income, shares, membership list or ticket sales, so it is a secret the fees the members have to pay. However, it is known that the initiation fees to become a member usually has a minimum of 5 figures.

Most of the Augusta National members are wealthy individuals, rich and prominent people from the high spheres. The Club´s members include some of the most powerful people in the worlds of business, politics, media and sports. Some of them can be seen in the tournament as spectators, wearing the green jacket, which means it is a member but there are also people we’ve never heard of, including family legacies.

The Club was so exclusive that they held racist and sexist policies in the past, not allowing African American people (only all caddies were required to be black) or women. The first black golfer was Lee Elder who participated in 1975, and in 1997, Tiger Woods became the first black person to win the tournament. And for women, only last year, in 2019, the course began co-hosting the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

The golfer with most titles won in this tournament is Jack Nicklaus, who has 6 victories (18 in total, counting the other tournaments), closely followed by Tiger Woods with 5 (15 in total counting the other tournaments).

Tiger Woods is the defending Masters champion this tournament. The 45 year old golfer ended his 14 year major drought with his victory in 2019. He won his fifth green jacket at the 2019 Masters, like he did in 1997, 2002, 2001 and 2005. The golfer has earned more than $120 million in prize money during his career and it is considered the richest golfer, and one of the richest athletes, of all time.
