Russian Daniil Medvedev was crowned US Open champion yesterday after his victory over Djokovic, in his third Grand Slam final of his career.
The 25-year-old player lost to Rafael Nadal in five sets in the final of the US Open 2019. In early 2021, he also lost in the Australian Open final to Djokovic in straight sets.
However, this year Medvedev has performed well throughout the competition, dropping only one set on the way to the final. He has finally been able to avenge his defeat in Melbourne, dashing Djokovic’s hopes, and proving he learned a lot from his failure against the Serbian in the Australian Open.
The 2019 US Open experience
Medvedev’s experience at the 2019 US Open was quite peculiar and unstable, being fined during a match for unsportsmanlike conduct and obscene gesture, for which he faced the new york crowd that turned against him. However, he won back the public again in the following rounds thanks to his personality, charisma, and excellent game.
What happened on the courts in 2019, according to himself, made him believe more in himself and improve as a tennis player. And from the experience, he has learned to simply be himself.

Before this year’s US Open, Medvedev explained to CNN Sports: “Of course, I get lessons. What you should do and what you shouldn’t do on the tennis court. But as a tennis player, I’m definitely different.”
With this victory, Medvedev could be at the forefront of the promising wave of young and emerging stars in men’s tennis today.
Very bad news for this historical year for Djokovic. He was the top favorite in this U.S. Open final, but he finally lost by a triple 6-4 to Russia’s Medvedev, sawing his chances of winning the Grand Slam fade away.
Djokovic reached the US Open final looking to win his 21st Grand Slam title and complete the first men’s calendar Grand Slam, i.e., win the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open in the same year.
The tennis player admitted the harshness of the defeat against the Russian champion. However, Djokovic declared after the game: “He played great tennis, he did everything right on the court and he is a great champion.”
With Medvedev ´s victory, Djokovic will have to wait for the next Grand Slams to try again.
