The United States defeated Mexico 3-2 on Sunday to be crowned champions, in the final of the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League. The match took place on U.S. soil at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, home of the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

About 37,600 spectators were able to enjoy a thrilling 90-minute match, which eventually went into extra time. It ended with a penalty kick scored by the USA team and another that the Aztec team missed.

This is the second time the USA has won the final from the seven played against Mexico in CONCACAF tournaments, the first since the 2007 Gold Cup.

A Thrilling Game

It was an exciting match in which Mexico took the lead in the 2nd minute. After 27 minutes, the US team tied the match. Both teams scored two more goals, one in the 79th minute by the Mexicans and the other by the US team, one minute before the end of regulation time, to tie the match.

Already in extra time, in the 114th minute, Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic made it 3-2 with a penalty. This result sealed the game, giving the victory to the USA team.

Incidents in the Match

Before the end of regular time, the referee had to stop the game for several minutes because of homophobic shouting by the Aztec fans against their opponents. Fans also threw from the stands plastic bottles and other objects. During the extra time, a fan also jumped onto the pitch.

Unfortunately, this is the third consecutive Mexico game on U.S. courts that had to stop by the same shouting. The first incident occurred in Arlington, Texas. The last two in Denver, Colorado, in the Nations League semi-final between Mexico and Costa Rica, and now in the final.

This has already cost the Mexican Football Federation several FIFA sanctions.

CONCACAF Nations League

The Nations League tournament was created to offer competitive matches to the 41 CONCACAF teams on FIFA dates. The present final was due to be held in June 2020 but because of the coronavirus pandemic, it was postponed.

This final has served as a prelude to the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which kicks off on 10 July in the United States.
