Villarreal beat Man United to win their first Europa League

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

Villarreal managed to beat favorites Manchester United yesterday in the UEFA Europa League final, crowning them champions of the tournament for the first time in its 98-year history.

After the match and extra time ended 1-1, with goals from Gerard Moreno and Edinson Cavani, the winner had to be decided in a penalty shoot-out. This was finally settled by De Gea´s failure (11-10).

Difficult match and flawless penalty shoot-out

It was not an easy match for Villarreal, as Manchester United imposed their rhythm from the beginning, creating many problems. But although United had the initiative, they were unable to get forward with any real danger. In the end, the match went inevitably to penalties.

And in the penalty shoot-out, the final result was not easy either, as the title was not won until the eleventh penalty. After a penalty shoot-out in which all the outfield players of both teams scored without fail, the title was finally decided in the duel between goalkeepers. Rulli succeeded in putting his shot into the net and then himself stopped De Gea’s shot.

It was an absolute success for Villarreal. The team went into the final as underdogs but could hold off the great Manchester United in the final match. The yellow submarine team knew how to play their cards right and thus achieved their dream of winning the competition for the first time in their history.

Unai Emery

Villarreal coach, Unai Emery and his tactics have a lot to do with this great result. The former Arsenal coach has just won his fourth Europa League. He has reached five finals in eight years with three different clubs. With Sevilla in 2014, 2015, 2016, with Arsenal in 2019, and now with champions Villarreal.

After the victory, Unai Emery declared: “I am very happy. These players have worked very hard through the season, for the president, the owner, the chairman. We are very proud of Villarreal. I think we deserved to win. It was Manchester United but we played a very competitive match tonight.”

Unai Emery’s team have made history in Gdansk 23 years after their first promotion to the First Division of the Spanish football.

Villarreal, the new 2021 Europa League champions, will play in next season’s Champions League, as well as the European Super Cup final.
